Dr. Cai receives Career Development Award

Professor Yuanfang Cai received one of Drexel University’s newly established Career Development Awards. This award was developed to provide funds for junior tenure-track faculty to develop networks, nationally or internationally, with colleagues whose work complements activities at Drexel.

The awards are designed to increase the exposure of Drexel’s faculty members, as well as senior colleagues at other institutions, who can be collaborators and role models while introducing outside scholars to faculty at Drexel. Other winners include Professors MinJun Kim and Kimberly Cook-Chennault, both from Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics, and Professor Margaret O’Neil from the College of Nursing and Health Professions.

Professor Cai’s award will support “Research Collaborations on Synergy of Software Architecture, Economics and Organization”, and she will collaborate with researchers at Harvard’s Business school and Siemens.

Professor Johnson participates in RISC Summer 2008

The Research Institute for Symbolic Computation (RISC) in Linz, Austria, one of the premiere centers for symbolic computation, held a series of nine conferences related to the field. Professor and Department Head Jeremy Johnson, who spent two years at RISC in the early 90s, presented a joint paper with Professors Bruce Char and Fred Chapman on the Freshman Computation Lab in the Education Session of the 14th International Conference on Applications of Computer Algebra (ACA) conference and a paper on Automatic Code Generation and Optimization at the Symbolic and Numeric Scientific Computing at the 4th International Conference on Symbolic and Numerical Scientific Computing (SNSC).

Professor Johnson, who chairs the steering committee for the International Symposium on Symbolic and Algebraic Computation (ISSAC), the premier conference in the series and field, was on hand to chair the ISSAC business meeting where Munich was selected to host ISSAC 2010. Next year’s ISSAC will be held at the Korean Institute for Advanced Study (KIAS) in Seoul. ISSAC was previously held at Drexel in 2003.

Math Forum and Dr. David Breen receive NSF grant for Math Images

Dr. Gene Klotz of Drexel’s Math Forum, Dr. David Breen, assistant professor in Computer Science, and Dr. Jason Silverman, assistant professor of Mathematics Education, received a grant from the National Science Foundation to establish the Math Images Web site.

The goals of the project include:
1) To provide undergraduates with a new and valuable educational experience while constructing the Web site, one that strengthens their skills and interest in mathematics, computer science and education, and encourages them to follow one of these career paths;
2) To evolve and document our means of doing this type of project, so that other faculty can provide undergraduates with this experience;
3) To construct a web site that lends itself well to classroom demonstrations, class and individual projects and honors work;
4) To stimulate interest and advance education in mathematics within the general public by creating an engaging and interactive Web site on the Internet.

The budget for this 18-month project is $128,673.
